free 3d printable models for names, name tags, nameplates – stl files. creating your own 3d printable name in almost any font with thingiverse customizer. in this post, we will explain the few steps you can follow to customize your own 3d printed name via the thingiverse customizer tool. while the tool is super easy to use, i have found that some fonts are less readable or don’t print as well. within the customizer tool, you can choose from one of hundreds of fonts. the process can take a long time to decide which one you like and it defaults to orbitron (which works well on the three different 3d printers i have tested it on). the tool pulls from the large list of open source fonts from google fonts. you get a much better view of individual fonts as well as being able to scroll through (and input your own text to see it live). again, customizer does this, too, but only one at a time and it can be a little slow and not as bright as as you can see in this screenshot below, there are a few options to choose. in addition to choosing the font that you like best, i recommend increasing the “basethickness percent” field as this will strengthen the overall print when students handle their new 3d printed name. this base is what connects all the letters into one unit, but if you want to simply print letters i recommend you head over to tinkercad and you can drag and drop letters (and shapes and just about anything you can imagine) onto the workplane (the area where you work on the actual 3d objects) and export them as stl files. the reason i started creating the names and stl files was that teachers mentioned the amount of time it took them to create projects for all their students. yes, they often want a student to create the project on their own, but sometimes a fast do*nload was all they there’s a bit alphabetical list (link) of all names and terms we have created, too. if you prefer to peruse the collection of already created 3d printable names on thingiverse, you can find it here
