the active school flag (asf) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.. the process aims to get more schools, more active, more often. schools wishing to achieve the asf begin the process by self-evaluating their current provision across 3 areas: physical education, physical activity and partnerships. schools must also organise an active school week programme and commit to having it as part of their annual school calendar. schools that can say ‘yes’ to all of the asf success criteria will be awarded with the active flag. the flag remains valid for a period of 3 years after which time schools will be invited to re-apply. asf is a department of education and skills initiative supported by healthy ireland.. an active break every day challenge (november 19th – december 15th) we would like to encourage as many schools as possible to take on the active break every day challenge starting on monday, november 19th. this challenge is a great way to generate whole school engagement with the active school flag process. it also means that children will gain more active minutes every day, in particular as the weather becomes colder and wetter sometimes preventing them from playing outdoors. “we really enjoyed the asf progress and we felt that both the teachers and children really engaged with it brilliantly. it was a great opportunity to recognise all the strengths the school had in terms of physical activity, equally, it was great to pinpoint the areas that needed to be improved and there was so many examples on the website, the improvements were made with great ease!” “this has been an amazing year for our school! we have loved every step of the journey through our active school accreditation. our pupils have grown in fitness and in appreciation for being active in general, and our staff are both fitter and more committed than ever to the message of the importance of keeping children (and ad*lts) active!”
