This is the blog post that marks the conclusion of my Google Summer of Code 2018. This summer I worked on PiCraft.jl I started working with Julia around the time the organisations were announced, I believe about a week before that. The only reason I got interested was that it was a numerical computation software and it was blazing fast especially for the way it’s code is written. I was otherwise going to try with Scilab or Octave because of my comfort with C++. I was hooked pretty fast. The Julialang slack is awesome, the people are extremely responsive and people are able to ask questions without any hesitation. The recipe to get into the Google Summer of Code programme is pretty simple and I kind of knew it by reading some blog posts by previous GSoC’ers. Do your best at Chris’ advice is what you want to follow not mine. He knows what he’s talking about and I definitely don’t. I initially started working with the intention to work on a package implementing special functions community would have found extremely helpful. But, I started doubting myself as a Graduate student could swoop in at the last second and show more skill and experience than me and take the steal. I didn’t want that to happen so I was looking for other projects in parallel. I found a project called “Minecraft Examples in Julia”. The idea was to write examples for “PiCraft.jl” which is a wrapper for the didn’t think much of this as why would the community of a numerical computing programming language take on a Minecraft project. However, I noticed that there existed mods which allowed the API functionality to be extended to the Ja*a version of Minecraft which is the true host for millions of kids and te*nage gamers. This also meant that there was huge educational potential in this project. I spoke to my mentor who expressed interest in this idea and submitted a proposal. I was selected.
