Summarized Content

In addition to being a great insulator, freezing and thawing does not reduce the compressive stiffness of the aggregates. Testing has shown no signs of frost cracks or disintegration after 300 freeze-thaw cycles. Glas* manufacturing has an age-old tradition which dates back to around 3500 BC when glas* is believed to have been first artificially Every ton of glas* that is recycled saves more than a ton of the raw materials needed to create new glas*, including: 1,300 pounds of sand; Foamed Glas* Aggregates are ultra-lightweight aggregates produced from 100% postconsumer recycled glas*. The aggregates have a highly frictional surface and combined with a low unit weight, inertness, high permeability, and insulating properties, foamed glas* aggregate The concept of foaming recycled glas* was first researched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the 1970s. It was not until later in the 1980s when a German company developed the process to create lightweight, insulating aggregates from glas* through a specialized manufacturing process. The technology was transferred to Norway in the early 1990s where it was developed further for use as a thermal barrier in road construction. Due to the very low unit weight of foamed glas* aggregate, the applications of this material have grown throughout the civil engineering market. Today, foamed glas* aggregates are used as lightweight fill for highways, bridge abutments, retaining walls, foundations, and green roofs, and can also be used as aggregate in lightweight concrete. The manufacturing process takes 100% curbside recycled glas* powder and mixes it with a foaming agent. The mixed powder is sent through a kiln and softened. During this process, the foaming agent creates bubbles within the softened glas* and this creates foamed glas* aggregates. The manufactured foamed glas* aggregates are approximately 15% of the bulk unit weight of typical aggregates. This makes the Lightweight backfill for bridge abutments to reduce lateral loads
