New bank notes: Algeria returns to its Amazigh origins - Algerie7 |
Description |
By Houari A. - A whole symbol. The new banknotes that the Bank of Algeria is about to put into circulation will see the image of a Numidian king enhance the trust paper. While maintaining the Emir Abdelkader, founder of the modern Algerian state, the political authorities wanted to follow the latest developments in the rehabilitation of Tamazight with a strong gesture, that of giving back to Jugurtha the place that is his in the Algerian nation. President Bouteflika had decided, it is recalled, to formalize the Tamazight language and the Amazigh New Year that Algerians are about to celebrate soon. A measure that was welcomed by all Algerians, except a handful of extremists and racists like the member of the same obedience Naima Salhi. This homecoming is the result of years of fierce fighting led by activists of the Amazigh cause and university researchers who, well before the independence of the country, have attempted to take this heritage out of oblivion through academic studies. The belated recognition of this element constituting the true base of the Algerian nation had been preceded by timid measures but which announced a positive evolution in the direction of a total rehabilitation of what constitutes the first identity of the Algerian people, pegged, well despite himself, in the Middle East. With the effigy of Jugurtha on Algerian banknotes, Algeria takes a step further on the path of self-recognition. The heroism and intelligence of the Numidian king Jugurtha is recognized, including by his Roman adversaries who describe him as a brave warrior to temerity, conducting guerrilla operations in which he excels but does not hesitate to engage real battles, as he had learned from the Romans in Spain, at the same time knowing how to conduct a complex diplomacy .
