To find out more about upcoming events please follow the bell hooks Institute Facebook page . bell hooks to appear at KY Writers Hall of Fame Ceremony Wednesday, January 31st, 7:00pm 2018 KENTUCKY WRITERS HALL OF FAME Lexington, KY- The Carnegie Center is proud to announce the four inductees into the 2018 Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame, including Berea author, feminist, and social activist, bell hooks. “bell hooks is one of the most influential cultural critics of our time,” said Neil Chethik, Executive Director of the Carnegie Center. “She has built a worldwide readership over 40 years with unique insights on such topics as love, race, and power. We are thrilled to invite her to join the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame.” In addition to bell hooks, three deceased Kentucky writers (listed below) will be honored at the 2018 Induction Ceremony slated for Wednesday, January 31, 7:00 PM. Doors will open at 6:30 PM for the event, which is free to the public (some sections are reserved). Light refreshments and sweets will be provided. We will also have a special musical performance from Appalachian singer and multi-instrumentalist Sam Gleaves. KET will, once again, record the event to broadcast at a later date. Between 2012 and 2017, 29 writers were inducted into the Hall of Fame. For a full list of the inductees including their bios visit Carnegie’s Website . Join us as we induct four writers into the 2018 Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame. Free event at the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning, featuring live music from Sam Gleaves. Wine and sweets will be served. The Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame was created to recognize Kentucky writers whose work reflects the character and culture of our commonwealth, and to educate Kentuckians about our state’s rich literary heritage. For a writer to have been eligible this year, he/she must be 1) published; 2) someone whose writing is of enduring stature; and 3) someone connected in a significant way to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Located close to the Appalachian hills in Berea, Kentucky, visitors to the bell hooks Institute have the opportunity to explore and visually engage with the artifacts, images, and m cripts talked about in bell hooks's work. For example, you can see the brown baby doll bell writes about in her memoir Bone Black, look at the Star of David quilt her grandmother gave her when she left for college, check out the international editions of hooks's books. The YAA Gallery at the bell hooks Institute showcases artwork by: Emma Amos, Carrie Mae Weems, Lyle Ashton Harris, Alison Saar, Alicia Henry, Elizabeth Catlett, Radcliffe Bailey, Moneta Sleet, and Margo Humphrey. The Institute will bring together academics with local community members to study, learn and engage in critical dialogue. The bell hooks Institute brings scholars and thinkers from in and outside Kentucky to engage with us, to teach us, and to share new ideas in a setting that is local and diverse. [censored]
