The soil of the Netherlands is moving. This is because we pump water from polders, extract minerals and build tunnels. It is also because the Netherlands lies in a delta and moves naturally. The soil movement has consequences for our water management, stability of houses, bridges and dikes. For our safety it is therefore important to be able to measure soil movement reliably. Bottom movement is measured from the ground and from satellites, with millimeter precision. This is the field of geodesy soil subsidence map. The unique thing about this card is that it is real measurement data (so no predictions), and that a distinction is made between the de*p and the shallow causes of the soil movement. In the map itself, these deformations are expressed as a deformation rate per resolution cell, in millimeters per year. These deformation rates are 'absolute' because they are linked to gravity measurements. GNSS measurements ensure independent verification. Systematic effects such as earth tides, ocean loading, loading by atmospheric pressure, and hydrological loading have been removed from the estimates.
