Dark Just (Kinlaw Remix)Sunun has a luring command of dials and limbs and drum skins that’s as grounded as it’s mystical - these machines have ghosts in them. Between Ooid’s modulated insect noises and crushed cymbals there are stories of when & why things were recorded that adds an aching humanity to the 5 machine dub pulses on her first official release. People who’ve seen her live have witnessed Sunun’s forest of wires and microphones and harps all feeding her 20 channel desk. She dubs it old-world style, but the results are always forward - making a 22nd century chorus from thousands of years of human feedback. The Sunun ecosystem is perfectly synthesised in Max Kelan’s unsettling VHS body-shot for ‘Dark Just’, filmed on location in Western Super Mare (mostly Pier 2). Sunun’s a familiar shape in the shadows of Bristol’s sound circuit - from Kuumba Centre to Cosies to Trinity. Her monthly residency on Noods Radio is titled by the mantra ‘Everything is Drum’ - and plays out to a teething Stokes Croft through the studio windows. She first took to the mic at Bokeh Sound w/ Jay Gl Dubs and Avon Terror Corps member Kinlaw (No Corner / Ceramics); who closes Ooid in cl ic discomix style with a remix of ‘Dark Just’. Ooid predates both their work in Avon Terror Corps by up to 1 year.

All you can do with Mars89’s mesh of gutter sonics is pick out the landmarks you recognise: ‘oh yeah that’s kinda drill, mmmm gqom, oooo Night Slugs’ but like the best hallucinations you just shut your eyes and ride it. End of The Death sounds like it comes from no place in particular. Slotting way outside of the current batch of hard-to-describe club music that we’re all struggling with, End of The Death is the Tokyo native’s third release, his 2nd for Bokeh (after 2017’s Lucid Dream EP) and his first official appearance on wax (after a run of 30 ‘Biological Tides’/’Poltergeist’ dubplates). Bokeh pays full respect to Mars89’s futuristic intent with a bad acid Akira sleeve airbrushed by Patrick Savile and a limited VR headset edition - accompanied by a 360° video environment by Seth de Silva. Bokeh Edwards and Mars89 met at the Bokeh Versions x Diskotopia night in Tangram hairdressers, Tokyo (sponsored by Pioneer) in October 2016. He’s a crucial member of the Tokyo’s Chopstick Killahz, a self-described “Post Tribal DJ Unit” lurking on the fringes of the city’s grime scene. Mars89’s self released his debut EP East End Chaos in 2016 on a limited run of zines. He’s also recently composed music for Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo 2017A/W and started a residency at Bristol’s Noods Radio to highlight DJ and production talent elsewhere in Asia.

I Came I Saw (Bad Tracking Remix)BKV020 is the first vinyl appearance of 'I Came I Saw' from 90s steppas legends the Bush Chemists (which appears as a bonus track on some CD editions of the now-cl ic Light Up Your Spliff LP) (which is coincidentally getting a re-issue this year via Mania Dub). This slice of string- heavy post-punk steppas comes with a typically squashed jungle refix from Bokeh staples Seekersinternational. Actually one of the earliest planned Bokeh releases, this refix now stands as a blunted pre-cursor to their surely-now-cl ic-cl ic RaggaPreservationSociety. Bristol's industrial poster-boys Bad Tracking ( Punk / Mechanical Reproductions) close this heavy dancefloor set with a nose-bleed-ragga-noise war cry, feeding the original through their feverish tape machines and sick minds. But it’s still dub right?
