We can return so many times, but the town isn’t ours anymore after we’ve moved away. I feel that way about my own hometown, Laurel, Delaware. I can’t return to the house I grew up in; it caught on fire in 2003 and we moved out of town limits. My grandparents, the people who raised me and gave me so much, are now long gone from this Earth. Even the schools I attended, from kindergarten until high school graduation, have been repurposed into something else or torn down entirely and rebuilt. But even though Laurel doesn’t look the same or feel the same, and even though I’m nowhere near being the same Elaine as I was the last time i lived there, Laurel is still home. It holds memories of long bike rides, de*p conversations at Records Pond, mushroom swiss burgers at Hardee’s and sodas with crushed ice at Pizza King, and friendships with people I’ve mostly fallen out of touch with but still miss just the same. Laurel will likely never be truly mine again, and that’s okay. It still feels like home and that can be enough.
