Because of you, this month will mark 30 years of caring for the most precious citizens in North Texas: children, older youth, and young ad*lts who have suffered from abuse, neglect, and homelessness. It’s never been an easy topic, and still isn’t. It’s one that very few were willing to acknowledge until two Plano ISD educators fought to open the doors of Collin County’s first and only shelter offering a safe place of refuge for homeless students on December 11, Today, City House remains the only mission in Collin County providing shelter, free counseling, and programs and services for ages newborn to 21 years. Our emergency children’s shelter (known as My Friend’s House) will have its tenth anniversary in 2019, and specializes in taking in large sibling groups that have been removed from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS). This means that we can provide these children with the best possible shot of staying together during their future placement process. You can imagine how heart-wrenching it is to witness siblings being forced to separate when destined for the foster care system. In addition to the shelter, we operate three transitional living homes for struggling young ad*lts 18-21 years old, and have an expansive youth resource center and street outreach program that provide the gold standard in preemptive services and intervention to help older youth and young ad*lts in immediate crisis. Here they can also obtain extended case management, or transition into one of our young ad*lt Since moving this past August into the larger resource center, we have had a 25% increase of at-risk young people seeking our help. This means more GEDs awarded and junior college acceptances, more necessary life skills taught, and more employment opportunities for those ready to work.
