Before getting into the nitty gritty of Psycho Las Vegas 2018 proper, I realized I neglected to mention in my Pool Party review the “surprise” show by Cough and Wovenhand on the Vinyl Stage, which was ticketed separately from the rest of the fest. As luck would have it, my wristband got me in, but Sally’s didn’t so there’s no pictures to show. This was my first time seeing Cough since 2016, when they performed at our humble Doomed & Stoned Festival in Indianapolis. I didn’t stay for Wovenhand because I was pretty worn out from all the travel. I’d been advised by a veteran of the scene long ago to watch out for festival burnout, so I planned on pacing myself. Sally, however, went fingers to the bone working her way from one stage to another over the course of four days. In fact, we only managed to see each other twice for a quick hug and then again for a photoshoot with Ensl*ved that never quite happened. I’ve learned from past experience that one of the benefits of a festival this size (especially in a venue as unique as Hard Rock) is networking and I never quite do enough of it. Perhaps I’ll make it a New Year’s Resolution for 2019’s gig. always have trouble sleeping in strange beds, so the first night was a lot of tossing and turning and, when I finally dozed off, it was a long, dark corridor of bad dreams. Before I knew it, four hours pas*ed and it was almost time for DVNE to take the stage. One of the best things about fests of this size is discovering new bands. I regret now attending 2017’s festival, because it was definitely the most diverse of the three, particularly in the variety of doom-stoner acts. This year seemed focused much more intensely on better known acts, though there were still plenty of surprises.
