When I was 16, I was in a car accident that caused major damage to my body. I was going to town to pick up balloons for my dad’s wedding. The brakes failed on the truck going down a very steep dirt road resulting in the truck hitting some de*p potholes and well as damaged both frontal lobes of my brain. It also resulted in shifting my spine 30 degrees from the shoulders up and broke my jaw in two places and twisted it. After the truck quit rolling, I climbed out through the pas*enger door. As I leaned over to get out, a big glob of blood hit the floor and I knew I was in trouble. I wound up walking a mile (measured after I recovered) to get help. While walking I was bombarded by dogs trying to attack me because of all the blood! I finally reached help and they called an ambulance and my dad and mom. The hospital was going to just send me home with a broken jaw! My mom, being a nurse, spoke up and forced them to do other tests, and that is when they found all the stuff wrong with me. It took 6 hours of surgery to remove all the bone fragments and to reconstruct my face with metal plates – not quite the 6 million dollar man. I was blinded from swelling for several weeks and couldn’t talk for 3 months due to my jaw being wired shut and the brain damage. After several months of recovery and learning how to speak again (due to brain damage), I was able to move forward with my life. Unfortunately, a year later at age 17, my mom was killed in a car accident, which made recovery and life in general very difficult to deal with. I graduated high school and went to a community college, both, while working a part-time job. I obtained a 2-year degree from the community college. I then was accepted into Michigan Technological University to study civil engineering. One summer I got a job at a factory and worked my way into an apprenticeship and got my journeyman’s card 4 years later in Mold Making. Not bad with someone with brain damage!
