        Eleuthera Bahamas, (pronounced E-Loo-Thra) is located approximately 220 miles from the coast of Southern Florida and about 60 miles from Nas*au, Bahamas.  Eleuthera is a long skinny island averaging only a mile wide and extending over 110 miles in length.   Its long skinny shape gives way to miles and miles of spectacular beaches just waiting to be explored.         Eleuthera is sparsely populated with only about 11,000 people scattered among 200 square miles.  The two largest settlements on the island are Rock Sound and Governors Harbor, both with a population around 1500.  Most of the settlements are small little communities, filled with colorful buildings and friendly people always offering a warm welcome.        Eleuthera unofficial motto is “Eleuthera, it’s not for everyone” and once you have been there you will understand how very true it is.  You will not find the Nas*au or Paradise Island style all inclusive resorts on Eleuthera.  If you are looking for beach-side service or a variety fine dining, shopping and entertainment options, Eleuthera is not the place you are looking for.  If you are looking for a place where you can walk to dining and shopping, go to organized events for the kids, take a group charter quiet sleepy island full of small widely spaced settlements, spectacular deserted beaches and some of the friendliest and most generous people you will ever meet.  There is a small handful of guides offering individual fishing, snorkeling and diving trips.  Evening entertainment is limited to the Friday night Fish Fry in Governors Harbor or live music during happy hour at one of the widely spaced local bars and restaurants.  There are a few fine dining restaurants and the rest are small local cafe's and take-a-way's.  Everything is widely spaced so a rental car is required.  Most of the accommodations are self catered vacation rentals, with a few small inns, boutique hotels and resorts.
