The Future Physician Leaders (FPL) program is a long-term summer mentorship program for prospective medical students who also want to fulfill a mission of service to the community. The seven-week summer program is made up of three components: the Leadership Lecture Series, Community Service and Research Project, and Physician Shadowing Rotations. While the majority of program takes place during the summer when students are out of school, there are also opportunities to volunteer and particpate in various health conferences, workshops and community events throughout the rest of the year. The community-based, collaborative program was started in 2009 by Dr. Raul Ruiz. The program is intended primarily for college and high school students living in the Inland Southern California region who are interested in and serving their community and pursuing a career in medicine.
