The Future Physician Leaders (FPL) program is a long-term summer mentorship program for prospective medical students who also want to fulfill a mission of service to the community. The seven-week summer program is made up of three components: the Leadership Lecture Series, Community Service and Research Project, and Physician Shadowing Rotations. While the majority of program takes place during the summer when students are out of school, there are also opportunities to volunteer and particpate in various health conferences, workshops and community events throughout the rest of the year. The program is intended primarily for college and high school students living in the Inland Southern California region who are interested in and serving their community and pursuing a career in medicine. The FPL program is a life-long mentorship program that aims to support students through all stages of preparation including college, med school, residency, and beyond. It is made up three overlapping components. These are: discussions as well as annual receptions that bring together students, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professional, partners, and healthcare leaders together in order to foster mentoring relationships. opportunity to actively work on improving healthcare access and community health. Past projects have included conducting health talks in community centers and churches, providing blood pressure and diabetes screenings at health fairs, and working with local clinics to up to 20 participants from each region the opportunity to get a first-person view of what it is like to be a doctor by shadowing physicians once a week for four hours over a six-week period.
