Thanks to emulation and virtualization many of these older macs can run current operating systems and VMware Fusion, Parallels for Mac and the free version of VirtualBox all provide a rich virtual environment in which to run non-native software. Rather than emulate a particular processor as emulation does, virtualization runs as an app under the existing operating system, therefore in its own virtual space. As such it is isolated from the hardware on which its running. Operation is almost exactly like an independent machine, it can do all the things a standalone machine can without the danger of viruses or malware. In some cases it Running OSX under OSX is an interesting trick. Essentially an OSX version such as El Capitan (10.11.6) will virtualize OSX 10.14 (Moja*e) and run the newer operating system as if in it’s own private machine and with all the normal functions expected.
