He is 17 years old, in his senior year of high school, and contemplating the next step in his life.  Since he was a boy, the importance of higher education has been drilled into him with an almost evangelical fervor. Sure he could pick up a trade, perhaps plumbing, and make a decent living, but this feels to him like a lower clas* living.  He’s special, he can do anything he wants! At least, that’s what his parents tell him. However, due to financial mismanagement or just the poor financial status of his parents, he is unable to afford even the in-state tuition rates of his local state university.  When considering his options, he discovers two standouts among them. First, he could take out hefty loans to pay his way, but he would end up starting his career tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Alternatively, he could enlist in the armed forces. In return for devoting only 36 months of his life, three measly years, he would receive tuition for a full four year bachelors program, as well as a housing stipend among other benefits.  It seems almost too good to be true! Of course, he enlists almost instantly and is whisked away to basic training. This young man’s dilemma is not unique.  Students of all backgrounds have difficulty paying their way through higher education programs, and the military offers a simple solution to their woes.  To alleviate, or perhaps capitalize, on this issue, the United States Army has shifted their stated goals. Rather than engaging in conflict, using force to neutralize threats to the country and its interests, the focus has been shifted to “peacekeeping” missions.  To this end, advertising campaigns have adopted slogans such as 1994’s “Be All That You Can Be” theme in order to re-brand the Armed Forces as an opportunity to improve oneself while helping the world.
