If you take the Fairfax Bolinas road you’ll end up at Alpine Dam Marin. It’s quite a site and worth a visit. The surrounding beauty of Alpine Lake and Lagunitas creek alone is calming to the soul. Alpine Dam project began in 1917 and was finished in 1919. It only cost $265,000.00. When it was completed January 7th 1919 it was just 100 feet tall, 325 fee long, and just 15 fee wide. You can cross in a car because it’s part of the Fairfax Bolinas Road. In 1924 C&H Sugar Company paid to have the dam raised in order to supply them with water for their refinery which is located in Crocket Ca. Why they would transport water from this location to Crocket is beyond me, but that’s what they did. They raised the dam another 8 I’ve driven past Red Hill in San Anselmo literally hundreds of times since I was a child. I grew up in Kentfield which is very close. My mother liked to go to St. Anselm’s church in San Anselmo which borders Ross. My mother would visit Red Hill Shopping center to get things at Longs Drugs (now CVS) back in the day. She would shop and I would look at the vnyl records in front of the camera film processing area. It’s where I first discovered the ACDC Highway To Hell album and other rock My grandmother also lived in San Anselmo for a while. I would do yard work and visit her often. I can’t believe they sold her homes back Anyway, as a result I found myself staring at Red Hill when we drove to the shopping center. I would always wonder what was on top. When you visit downtown Larkspur or anywhere in central Marin you wouldn’t think there would be any real hikes nearby because there are so many streets and homes. But if you know where to look you’ll discover quite a few great hikes. Dawn Falls is one such hike. It is one of the most beautiful trails in Marin. Dawn Falls is a small waterfall de*p in Larkspur’s Madrone Canyon. The trail that leads to the falls, and well beyond, is called Dawn Falls trailhead. You can find it quite easily on Google Maps.
