The ending of the Beggar’s Opera is very shocking to the readers, but only because it must please the audience.  Instead of Macheath being hanged, as has been built up, he is reprieved of his punishment.  John Ga* satirizes the audience by changing the ending to satisfy them.  Instead of ending the play in the way that it has been led to, Macheath is freed along with the rest of the criminals.  As the Beggar says, the ending would follow “strict poetical justice,” but the Player says that because it’s an opera, it “must end happily.”(Ga* 3.16)  The ending of the play is reflective of art in the time period.  It is easily changed in order to please the people and shows the sanctity of art.  John Ga* satirizes the society as a whole because the Player chooses to have a At the end of John Ga*’s “The Beggar’s Opera”, Macheath is not executed.  This came as a huge surprise being as he was supposed to be hung for the crimes he had committed.  This was very upsetting, because Macheath deserved to be killed.  Execution is a just way of punishment for the crimes Macheath had committed.  Ga* does this so he can leave the spectator of the play happy.  Macheath is a vary easy character to like, so many spectators in that time period wanted to see him live a happy life.  He goes on to live with Polly.  This ending is very unrealistic.  In real life during this time period, Macheath would have been executed.  The end was very satirical, because Ga* is showing how operas are always supposed to have happy endings.  As a reader, this was upsetting, because sometimes endings that are not happy are better. They make the reader make their own resolutions to questions that have not been answered. have no doubt that it wouldn’t have made sense to an audience of the eighte*nth century.  Most audiences want justice as well as a slight amount of carnage.  Human beings are inherintley violent, which is why the most interesting news is news in which someone gets hurt.
