First, let me commend you all on a great job here, as well as in clas*.  I thought the blog worked well, even (or maybe especially) when tackling a difficult issue like race.  I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on the matter–or the NBA playoffs if that’s It does looks like we have a critical mas* of students willing to  solve the race issue once and for all.   I’ll probably get to Gilligans’ sometime after 6:30, as I’ll have to cut out a little early.  As a reminder, if you borrowed any books from me this term, please return them on Thursday night!  (I have your names in my desk…) Mostly I have ended up just commenting here and there, and only have one new post for you.  I invite you all to return to the earlier post and comment on my comments, or on points I didn’t get to, or to make new points of your own, now that we’ve stirred up some ideas.  For those of you who are interested, what do you think of Pascoe’s point about contemporary racialist ideas?  Pascoe implies that the view she terms ‘color-blindness’ – or saying race doesn’t matter at all – is dangerous because it fails to recognize the extent to which historical patterns have shaped Americans’ opportunities along racial lines.  Race may not be ‘real’ Pascoe seems to be saying, but it did (and continues to) have a real impact.  Ignoring that impact by being blind to race hardens the On the other hand, Nate, Kelly and perhaps others argue that continuing to perpetuate any vestige of that racial system threatens to stand in this country’s ever getting rid of that system’s legacy.  Having thought more about the construction and maintenance of racial lines this semester than you ever thought you would, where do you stand on this contemporary issue?  (again, an answer is NOT required) P.S.  Are we meeting next week or not?  Let me know ifyou have an opinion, and if so where.
