chronicles of the pas*ive income pursuit scroll down to content here we go folks. i’m starting this blog to capture my journey through the winding path of becoming financially self reliant. but i’ve been in manufacturing for over 15 years, and have hated almost every minute of it. i started my career with the same ambitions as most americans. “work hard, and make a sh*t ton of money”. i started in industry (heat treating) as a general laborer. my bosses noticed my natural leadership ability, and within a year i was running my own shift. it was decent money for a 20 year old, but it wasn’t enough. i began to take an interest in the how the equipment i was operating functioned on the component level. so i decided to go back to school and study electrical engineering while working 50+ hours a week (work really hard). this was probably the least stressful time in my life. i had a goal and a plan to get there. i was promoted a few times within 10 years. the company really saw something in me (for some reason). i eventually became the operations manager making a whopping $50k per year when i decided to leave the company. one of the hardest (and best) decisions i’ve ever made. by this time i had been married to the love of my life for 8 years. we had just had our second beautiful daughter, and i was a miserable as*hole working 70+ hours per week barely making ends meet. when i say as*hole, i mean as*hole. my wife was ready to leave, and i frankly was i decided if i was going to be miserable, i should at least be able to pay the bills. i took a job as a line level supervisor for one of the big 3 automakers. sure, supervising people that didn’t want to work (and by all rights) didn’t have to work was exciting. (funny how it’s hard to perceive sarcasm in text). i had to do very little other than make an occasional radio call for maintenance. this gave me a minute or two of free time. i researched thousands of articles on investing, with grandiose dreams of becoming the next warren buffet.
