Historically the entire production of Escorial wool was reserved for the sole use of the Spanish Royal Family. In the fourte*nth century Spanish royalty took possession of a unique flock of sheep originating from North Africa. This flock became known as the Escorial flock when the Escorial palace was built in the sixte*nth century on the plains overlooking Madrid where the flock grazed. Today descendants of the original flock are extremely rare and found only in Southern Australia and New Zealand.
