The City program that offers the tax exemption is called the HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT ZONE PROGRAM (a.k.a. HNIZ program). Not all homes in McKinney are eligible for this exemption. There are basically three criteria that must be met before a home is eligible – they are, location, age, and condition. The criteria are as follows: extend beyond the normal McKinney Historic District. This means a house can be eligible even if it is not on a street designated with unaltered from the original, or if it has been, the alteration must be at least 50 years old. The City has a specific application process for awarding the HNIZ tax exemption.
