Advanced Materials Testing Services can also investigate the root cause of failed items. Failure investigation is a systematic approach to the collection and ysis of evidence and data relating to the failure. In many cases an investigation may include: collation of data relating to the history and operating conditions of the item, visual examination, NDT, fractography, chemical ysis, mechanical testing and metallurgical ysis (e.g. microscopy and SEM). The scope of testing is dependant on the material, the type of item and the available evidence. When all of the evidence and data has been ysed a root cause of failure may be identified, allowing the client to reduce the likelihood of failure recurring.
