It’s New Year’s Eve! Now, I know some of you are getting the champagne ready, and we’ll be heading out to a bar tonight, but before getting the party started, we like to reflect on the past year and think about what we want to accomplish in the new year. If you recall, around this time last year, Wanderer and I were working on a non-fiction book proposal, which eventually sold to Penguin Random House! Our first draft was accepted and Quit like a Millionaire will be published in 2019! Since this was our 2018 New Year’s resolution, “The markets are crashing, this whole FIRE thing isn’t going to work!” “The world is going to end! 2008 is happening again, we’re all going to be screwed!” “A recession is coming! Should I sell everything in my IRA?” These are just some of the comments, messages, and e-mails we’ve been getting lately. With the S&P 500 down 11% since the the beginning of the year and 18% from the peak, I can see why readers who haven’t been through a market crash would be spooked. But here’s the thing about becoming FIRE. You can’t be on Today’s reader case is a rather interesting one. A reader is writing to us about their 70 (!) year old mother, and asking us how to manage her retirement finances. Now, finances for the elderly is a bit trickier than normal finances, because they can’t recover if anything goes wrong. This situation is doubly risky because I’m giving advice to the reader (who admits she’s relatively new to this FIRE stuff), and she’s relaying it her 70-years-old mom. The odds of a broken-telephone communication problem are high here. So while I’m Today I’d like to introduce you all to a friend I met during this year’s Chautauqua in Greece. I’m endlessly fascinated by how people from other countries pull off FIRE, and Steve Cronin is an expert on how to invest towards Financial Independence while living as an expat in the United Arab Emirates. Not only that, he’s got his own blog DeadSimpleSaving.com where he writes about expat investing,
