COMMEMORATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR IN NORTH CAROLINA, 2011-2015. The final Civil War Sesquicentennial symposium, co hosted by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, will be held in the Lower Cape Fear, February 27-28, 2015.  On Friday, February 27, participants will enjoy on-the-hour tours of Fort Anderson State Historic Site between the hours of 1-4 p.m.  Keynote William C. “Jack” Davis will speak at Murrow Hall in Southport at 7 p.m., following, the NC Maritime Museum at Southport The University of North Carolina-Wilmington will host the Civil War Sesquicentennial symposium on Saturday, February 28, with lectures from noted Civil War historians and authors focusing on the theme of Sacrifice and Legacies of the Civil War.  Registration will begin at 7:45 a.m. Welcome and introduction of the keynote begins at 8:30 a.m. Craig Symonds, our keynote speaker begins at 9 a.m.There will be two sessions before lunch, a lunch break, and a final session after lunch with closing remarks by James Leutze. The event will conclude with a night-time cannon fire at Fort Fisher State Historic Site. Saturday programming includes a box lunch. UNC-Wilmington students may attend all events for free, with a $10 Saturday lunch option. In preparing for the anniversary of the war, some states have formed legislatively authorized and funded commissions. North Carolina has not. In light of uncertainty as to whether a commission would take shape, the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, part of the Department of Cultural Resources, in 2006 formed an in-house committee to guide and promote agency-sponsored observances. Organizers, with the counsel of a panel of academic advisers, endorsed a wide range of programs intended to appeal to diverse audiences.
