Large Splash Incense Burner — Nur Ceramics

Description

A Mabkhar in Arabic or Dabqaad in Somali is a censer, or incense burner, used to burn resin on coals. The resin is derived from aromatic tree resin such as frankincense or myrrh. Incense smoke, like tobacco smoke, was believed by many indigenous traditions to carry ones prayers to the Gods. During the peak of the ancient spice trade it is said that frankincense was more valuable than gold, therefore, burning frankincense was the greatest form of ritualistic offering. The design of this piece is a modern interpretation of a traditional form of a mabkhar. To create the form, slabs of clay are rolled and hand-cut into the shapes to create the walls and embled by hand.  The piece is fired at a low temperature to harden the clay, then a matte black liquefied clay known as a slip is splattered across. A final firing is done for the clay and glaze to fuse together and reach their final temperature. This incense burner accommodates every type of incense- charcoal, sticks, as well as pyres.  Includes 2 pints of black sand.  Made to order: 4-6 weeks 10x5 inches Due to the handmade nature of this piece, expect slight variations. To guarantee the longevity of this piece, it is best to avoid placing it in the dishwasher or microwave.

Sibha (Beaded Accent) — Nur Ceramics

Description

This piece is inspired by a sibha, also known as a misbaha, a Sufi rosary made up of a total of 33 beads, divided into three sections of 11. A sibha is used in the ritual of zikr, or remembrance used in the daily glorification of God similar to the use of malas in mantra recitation. The number 33 is a divine number in Islamic mysticism, seen as a reflection of the 99 names of God. The use of beads as a decorative accent was inspired by antique Bedouin necklaces used as coffee table accents in many Saharan and East African homes. Each bead is formed by hand by creating two spherical semi circles that are then fused to make one bead, and pierced on either end. They are dried and fired at a low temperature to harden the clay, and a matte black liquefied clay known as a slip is splattered across the beads. They are then re-fired to their final temperature to achieve their ceramic state. The beads are strung using hemp rope and a t el of black Highland wool is carefully added. Made to order: 4-6 weeks 17 inches without t el  Due to the handmade nature of this piece, expect slight variations.
