EVERY DAY MAY NOT BE GOOD, BUT THERE IS ONE GOOD THING IN EVERY DAY. We finally did our first 3 Act Task (a sign of how this year has gotten a bit away from me as I planned to kick this off a while back). We used Graham Fletcher’s Seesaw task as we’re in a multiplication and division unit. My 3rd graders are a varied group in just about every way. Watching them tackle this question was such fun. They talked to each other about the video and shared what they were noticing and wondering. When we had a compelling question they headed off and gave it a go. Some grabbed blocks. Some grabbed scratch paper. Some talked with friends and some worked alone. But they were all focused and working and I had several kids come up to the docu*ent camera and show what they did before we watched the final act. I looked for kids who had used different strategies. That might have been my favorite part because students who feel less competent in math shared with as much confidence as kids who see themselves as math whizzes. Baby steps to seeing all of us as math whizzes. I worried about my kids who aren’t looking forward to the holidays because it’s the first (or second or fifth…doesn’t really I worried about my kids with anxiety and depression…would the holidays be too much? I worried about my kids whose main source of nutritional value comes from school. I worried about my kids who are most themselves at school but have to be very calculated at home. The worry isn’t something to wish away. The worry is proof you care. But listen here: they need you come January. They need you to be refreshed and renewed and ready to hit the ground running. Sleep. If you don’t cohabitate with a two-year-old, please sleep in. (If not for yourself, do it for me. I’ve completely forgotten what Set aside a week or longer to do zero school stuff this break. I’m Mommy and Rebecka for the next ten days, I’ve decided. I’ll leave a few days for school work and be Mrs. Peterson again then.
