Youth Protection Training

Announcing Important Changes in Youth Protection Training Requirements for Volunteers in Scouting All Registered s in Scouting Must Remain Current in Youth Protection Training To Continue Participation Effective immediately, the Pacific Skyline Council has updated its approach to Youth Protection Training. The following policy now applies: • All registered s must take Youth Protection Training (“YPT”). • New leaders and volunteers should be YPT-trained before any contact with Scouts begins. • YPT currency must cover the level of Scouting involvement of each : - YPT for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts is the first and baseline course; - YPT for Varsity Teams, Venture Crews & Sea Scouts is the second level, focusing on issues more relevant to age and co-ed Scouts; - YPT for Exploring Posts is the third level of Youth Protection Training. • All registered s must remain current in YPT to be re-registered each year. - BSA currently requires Youth Protection Training completion within the prior 24-months. - s with expired YPT will not be re-registered or allowed to participate in future Scouting events. • The Pacific Skyline Council is following BSA Western Region guidance, and strongly recommends repeating YPT each year – alternating YPT courses taken to ensure exposure to the most current course content – to maximize the safety of our programs. As part of Scouting’s ongoing drive to be the premier youth protection organization in the nation, universal Youth Protection Training (“YPT”) of all Registered s and Leaders is now mandatory, and should be repeated each year. The Pacific Skyline Council adopted this updated BSA policy, which requires that current Youth Protection Training is mandatory for all new registrations or re-registration for individuals and units. s who lack current YPT will not be registered or allowed to continue leading youth in Pacific Skyline Council. Furthermore, to ensure exposure to the most current youth protection guidelines, Youth Protection Training should be re-taken annually, alternating between the age-specific courses offered. We continue to encourage all s and parents of our Scouts to take the online YPT courses (even if they are not formally registered or actively volunteering with any unit). In that way, everyone will become better aware of the outstanding protections in place to protect youth while engaged in Scouting activities, and be better able to identify and report questionable activities or cir stances they might witness or hear about in Scouting. BSA’s Youth Protection Training and programs are among the best available today, and are widely viewed as the “gold standard” for youth-serving organizations. The Pacific Skyline Council’s Executive Board is committed to seeing everyone become familiar with BSA’s YPT efforts and programs, and help ensure the safety of all youth in Scouting by achieving 100% YPT-trained s in our Council. Gary Butler, BSA’s Deputy Chief Scout Executive, recently captured the essence of this effort when he said, “Youth Protection will become so engrained in the BSA culture that it is second in recognition only to the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
