I have been rather too busy of late to post here, but I don’t want you to think I have not been pondering. I certainly have – a lot – but I am pushing away at another blog, learning Khmer, and writing 2 books, and you’d be surprised how much time that eats up in the day. (A joke — I know you would not be surprised). But today is Sunday – first Sunday of Advent – and I make it my policy not to drive myself too hard on Sundays. Furthermore, the first Sunday in Advent marks a new ecclesiastical year, and taking stock when the year turns (however defined) is never wasted. So, today I want to talk about success – eventually. Although I work on various projects 12 to 14 hours most days, I always take little breaks so that I am not killing myself. One way to ease up for a few minutes is to watch a YouTu*e video, or bits of one. Sometimes I look at one that has several puzzles in it, or is a mathematical challenge of some sort. They are amusing most of the time, although they can get repetitive. I also look at small bits of self-help vids out of curiosity occasionally, but they routinely annoy me. I started watching one recently that was about “10 Things That Women Hate” purportedly to help guys pick up women, narrated by a woman who calls herself a “fashion consultant for men.” Around #3 on her list was “men wearing unironed shirts” – her reasoning being, “If you cannot look after yourself, how are you going to look after us?” What ????????????? In this day and age the best advice you can give men is that women need taking care of by men, so shape I also check into vids occasionally concerning motivation, but they usually get short shrift. Ditto procrastination. I have no trouble with either motivation or procrastination, so I can sum up my advice (were I to give it!) in one sentence: “If you are having trouble with motivation or procrastination, it is probably because you don’t want to do something, so figure out why you don’t want to do it.”
