We have made the absolute most of this month in Malaysia. And tomorrow, we start our journey home. Our official Remote Year The multicultural nature of Kuala Lumpur has been such a refreshing change compared to most of the other cities and countries we have visited in Asia. The city embraces the old and the new, as well as different religions and ethnic groups. Personally, I’ve enjoyed the wide range of physical and cultural activities available here, such as rock climbing, whitewater rafting, I’m also so grateful for the friendships we have made and the strength of my relationship with Mr. PFL. I know that we will never be able to create an experience like this again and I’m so glad we took the plunge. Once we have a chance to debrief after returning home, I am excited to see what crazy adventure we will take on next! Amazing how fast the time goes! We’ve been based in Kyoto this month, but also spent significant time in Tokyo and Seoul, South Korea. We also spent a powerful day in Hiroshima and a morning in the DMZ (demilitarized Japan is filled with shrines, just like Thailand was filled with temples. Seoul, on the other hand, had a lot of palaces. I’ve found myself contemplating the history of people in relation to wars, religious institutions, cultural norms, and the enormous influence of those in power. I haven’t had any profound insights on how any of this history should be impacting the present, but I feel more I’m also amazed by the resiliency of people and countries. South Korea has flourished after nearly being destroyed. Japan remembers the lives lost due to the atomic bombs, but doesn’t hold a grudge. If only we, as individuals, could react this way to adversity.
