Yes his responses were disappointing (at the least) and damaging (at the very worst), but honestly I am not surprised. I am not surprised that he could not find any fault in the comments section of Deb’s post. As he said himself, he was having trouble identifying the comments as even being racist at all.⠀ ⠀ Speaking as a white person on behalf of white people, THIS is our problem. We have blindness that gives us trouble identifying the difference between things being outwardly, or explicitly racist, and things being RACIALIZED, which can be a lot more subtle. Yes some of the comments left were outwardly mean and insidious. But, no, they did not EXPLICITLY state any racial words, stereotypes, or discriminatory language. But the comments were 100% racialized due to the broader context (i.e. back-to-back articles on the same topic from a black contributor (who’s piece had a satirical tone) followed with that of a white contributor’s piece (which had a serious tone), thus framing these two entities together, forcing a coupled (and unjustified) comparison.⠀ ⠀ The outcome of this framing resulted in Deb being disparaged and criticized and the other article’s white author commended and affirmed. This is a prime example (sorry to make an example of Deb— she’s a human being not a case study) of how something may not be explicitly racist but gets gnarled into something racialized because the way it is framed and how people interact with the content (and note I say “content” and not “people” because social media automatically creates a veil that makes it much easier and acceptable to say hurtful or racist things to a thing than to a person). ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Continued the next several the conversations revolving around what happened with @clothedinabundance (Deb) and the owner of the @theminimalistwardrobe,
