Hideto Tanihara (No. 48) Last start: T-15: JGT Championship Mori Building Cup Shishido Hills (Japan Golf Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: T-51 38-year-old Hideto Tanihara has 14 wins on the Japan Golf Tour but will be playing in just his second U.S. Open. He shot an opening-round 70 at Oakmont in 2016 but followed it up with a 76 and did make the cut en route to a tie for 51st. Gene Sauers (No. 6-Official Senior World Golf Ranking) Last start: T-29: Principal Charity Cl ic (Champions Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP 54-year-old Gene Sauers hasn’t played the U.S. Open in three decades — his last appearance was in 1987 at The Olympic Club when he tied for 58th — but a victory at the Senior Open got him into the field. Sauers is likely just glad to be playing golf after a skin disease kept him away from competitive golf for nearly five years. Jamie Lovemark (No. 96) Last start: T-10: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Jamie Lovemark, who has had numerous top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR but hasn’t quite broken through is playing some solid golf. He finished tied for 18th at the Byron Nelson and tied for 10th at the Memorial on his way to his second U.S. Open appearance. He finished tied for 18th at Chambers Bay in 2015. Michael Putnam (No. 1021) Last start: T-37: FedEx St. Jude Cl ic (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP After being the only one not to make the field from the 4-for-3 playoff in Columbus, Michael Putnam snuck into the U.S. Open when Ryan Moore withdrew with a shoulder injury. He has three career victories, all on the Web.com Tour, and will be making his fifth appearance at the U.S. Open. His best finish was a tie for 45th at Congressional in 2011. In the seven cuts he’s made, he’s finished no lower than 23rd and has been in the top nine four times with T-9s at Torrey Pines in 2008 and Pinehurst in 2014, a T-8 at Pebble Beach in 2010 and a solo eighth at Chambers Bay. He missed a little time following The Masters with a hand injury but is healthy enough to take a run at Erin Hills. Alex Noren (No. 8) Last start: T-15: Nordea Masters (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: MC Alex Noren is playing great golf these days. He finished tied for 15th at the Nordea Masters and put on a brilliant display the week before to win the BMW PGA Championship with a 10-under 62 on the final day to erase a seven-shot deficit. It was his ninth victory on the European Tour and while he hasn’t had much luck in his previous U.S. Open starts — he’s missed the cut three of four times, including the last two years — he’ll be looking for more low numbers at Erin Hills. Tyrrell Hatton (No. 18) Last start: T-30: BMW PGA Championship (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP If you’re not yet familiar with Tyrrell Hatton, remedy that immediately. He’s been in the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking for more than a year and continues to impress. Following a win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last year, he’s had six top-ten finishes around the world and has made his way into the top 20. Looking for a sleeper pick? Try this guy. Tommy Fleetwood. Mandatory Credit: Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports U.S. Open Round 1: 10th tee, 8:40 a.m. U.S. Open Round 2: 1st tee, 2:25 p.m. Brian Harman (No. 50) Last start: MC: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Brian Harman can be clutch. With Dustin Johnson and Pat Perez nipping at his heels just over a month ago at the Wells Fargo Championship, Harman drained a 30-footer on the final hole to walk away with a one- victory. That may not translate to success at Erin Hills — he’s missed the cut in two U.S. Open starts — but he knows he can contend with the best and will look to show people that he belongs in the top 50 in the world. Tommy Fleetwood (No. 33) Last start: MC: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP 26-year-old Englishman Tommy Fleetwood will be making his second U.S. Open appearance when his tee time rolls around on Thursday morning. He finished in a tie for 27th at Chambers Bay two years ago and needs to get things rolling as he hasn’t been playing his best golf as of late. After a second-place finish at the Shenzhen International, he tied for 41st at THE PLAYERS and then missed the cut at both the BMW PGA Championship and the Memorial. Bud Cauley (No. 98) Last start: T-25: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Bud Cauley made his professional debut at the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional but he hasn’t been back until this week. He tied for 63rd that week and finally returns after a good showing at the Columbus sectional. He recorded three consecutive top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR recently and hit the top 25 at the Memorial. He hit a little rough patch around The Masters but fought back nicely with a tie for fourth at THE PLAYERS and finished in the same position this past weekend at the St. Jude. He’ll be making his fourth U.S. Open start with his best finish coming last year at Oakmont where he tied for 32nd. Thomas Pieters (No. 25) Last start: T-14: BMW PGA Championship (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP At 25 years of age and No. 25 in the Official World Golf Ranking, former Big 10 champ Thomas Pieters is one of the true young guns in golf and will be looking to make a mark in his first U.S. Open. He’s won three times on the European Tour and just missed the medal stand at the Olympics in Rio last summer. Experience might not be on his side but he’s got the game to put a scare into the field this week. Brooks Koepka (No. 22) Last start: T-37: FedEx St. Jude Cl ic (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: T-13 Brooks Koepka is a threat and his U.S. Open record proves it. After missing the cut in his first start at The Olympic Club five years ago and missing the event the following year, the former All-American at Florida State finished tied for fourth at Pinehurst in 2014, tied for 18th at Chambers Bay in 2015 and tied for 13th at Oakmont in 2016. Is 2017 the year that the 22nd-ranked player in the world breaks through for that first major win? Feb 7, 2016; Scottsdale, AZ, USA; Hideki Matsuyama reacts after tying Rickie Fowler on the 18th hole during the final round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament at TPC Scottsdale. Mandatory Credit: Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports U.S. Open Round 1: 10th tee, 8:51 a.m.U.S. Open Round 2: 1st tee, 2:36 p.m. Hideki Matsuyama (No. 4) Last start: T-45: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: MC This is easily one of the most high-profile groups of the tournament and fourth-ranked Hideki Matsuyama leads the way. With 13 wins around the world over the past four years, it’s a mystery that he hasn’t yet broken through to win a major but this may just be his week. This is his fifth consecutive U.S. Open and while he missed the cut at Oakmont last year, he finished tied for 18th at Chambers Bay and tied for 10th at Merion in his debut. Rickie Fowler (No. 9) Last start: MC: FedEx St. Jude Cl ic (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: MC Speaking of a great player without a major, Rickie Fowler has his sights set on rectifying that situation. Fowler has played in eight of the past nine U.S. Opens but unfortunately has missed the cut in four of those, including the last two. He finished second at Pinehurst in 2014 but that was Martin Kaymer’s tournament and Fowler finished eight s back. Following his tie for 23rd at Oakmont last year, Rahm finished third in his pro debut at the Quicken Loans National and has eight top-10 finishes since then, including a T-2 at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational a few weeks ago. He’s played the last three, finishing tied for 17th at Pinehurst and tied for 27th at Chambers Bay before missing the cut at Oakmont, but isn’t playing his best coming in. He’s missed two of the last three cuts and finished tied for 52nd in Memphis. Jason Kokrak (No. 99) Last start: T-35: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: T-37 Jason Kokrak had a nice outing at the AT&T Byron Nelson but outside of that, he hasn’t been spectacular. He finished tied for 35th at the Memorial but missed the cut or finished 56th or lower in his last 10 starts. This will be his first U.S. Open at a venue besides Oakmont. He finished tied for 37th last year and missed the cut there in 2007. He’s missed the cut in four of the five professional events he’s played in since then, including the 2016 Open Championship and the 2017 Masters. This is his first U.S. Open appearance. Martin Laird (No. 114) Last start: T-52: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Martin Laird has three PGA TOUR victories but still had to survive the Columbus sectional to secure his sixth U.S. Open appearance. He missed the cut in his first four starts but finished tied for 21st at Merion in 2013, his most recent start. His best finish in 2017 was a tie for seventh in Phoenix. In his last seven starts, Willett has three missed cuts, a withdrawal, a 69th-place finish, a T-39 and a T-58. Zach Johnson (No. 70) Last start: T-40: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: T-8 The length of Erin Hills doesn’t seem to suit a guy like Zach Johnson, but it’s best to never count him out of anything. He finished eighth at Oakmont in 2016 and his ability to stay in the fairway will help tremendously this week. He hasn’t played particularly well recently but don’t be surprised if he surprises people this week. Angel Cabrera (No. 620) Last start: T-41: Dean & DeLuca Invitational (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: T-37 Angel Cabrera is in the final year of his exempt status from his 2007 U.S. Open win at Oakmont and is likely making his final start in his 18th appearance. He’s made just three cuts in 10 starts in 2017 but should get a nice round of applause from the Erin Hills gallery upon completing his last round. Perhaps he’ll surprise everyone and get that on Sunday as opposed to Friday. Billy Horschel (No. 47) Last start: T-4: FedEx St. Jude Cl ic (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: T-32 Billy Horschel’s win at the Byron Nelson last month couldn’t have come at a better time. It vaulted him into the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking to keep him from having to qualify and the 2014 FedExCup champion also finished fourth this past weekend at the St. Jude Cl ic to stay hot. This is his fifth U.S. Open appearance; he finished tied fourth in 2013 at Merion. Branden Grace (No. 29) Last start: T-9: BMW PGA Championship (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: T-5 Branden Grace has played in the U.S. Open four times and following a T-51 in 2012 and a missed cut in 2013, he had a chance to win at Chambers Bay before settling for a tie for fourth and followed it up with a tie for fifth at Oakmont last year. His name is becoming a fixture near the top of the leaderboard at major championships. Francesco Molinari (No. 17) Last start: T-24: FedEx St. Jude Cl ic (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Francesco Molinari is making his eighth U.S. Open start but has missed the cut three times. The four-time winner on the European Tour finished tied for sixth at THE PLAYERS Championship and followed it up with a solo second at the BMW PGA Championship. His best finish at the U.S. Open was a tie for 23rd at Pinehurst in 2014. Patrick Reed (No. 19) Last start: T-57: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: MC Patrick Reed is the ultimate wild card. You just never know what you’re trying to get from the 26-year-old but it’s usually pretty exciting. This is his fourth appearance at the U.S. Open — his best finish came two years ago at Chambers Bay when he tied for 14th — and it will be fun to see how he tackles Erin Hills. No, he’s not the player he once was but the 47-year-old two-time U.S. Open champ (1994, 1997) is still beloved by the gallery and that will be no different at Erin Hills when he tees it up for the 25th time at this championship. Lucas Glover (No. 100) Last start: T-45: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: MC 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover has just one win since his triumph at Bethpage but his story gives hope to a lot of the field. Glover is just one of a handful of recent winners to win after going through sectional qualifying, something he doesn’t have to do for a couple of more years. He had a nice T-6 at THE PLAYERS Championship but hasn’t made a U.S. Open cut since 2011. After missing the cut at Chambers Bay the year following his win, the former world No. 1 finished tied for 37th at Oakmont in 2016. This will be his 10th U.S. Open appearance. Jordan Spieth (No. 5) Last start: T-13: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: T-37 Also a former top-ranked player in the world, 2015 champ Jordan Spieth is eyeing a third major championship. It will be interesting to see how Erin Hills treats him but any time Spieth tees it up, he has a chance to win. He struggled for a couple of weeks last month but has rebounded nicely with a tie for second at the Dean & DeLuca and a tie for 13th at the Memorial. Spieth was in that big tie for 37th a year ago at Oakmont. Dustin Johnson (No. 1) Last start: MC: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: 1st There’s nothing “former” going on here. Dustin Johnson is the best player in the world right now and he’s going to be for a while. Looking to become the first player since Curtis Strange in 1989 to to back-to-back, DJ comes into Erin Hills as the clear U.S. Open favorite. And with his wife, Paulina, giving birth to the couple’s second child on Monday, a Father’s Day finish at the top would be pretty sweet, especially given the fact that Johnson had to miss The Masters due to that freak accident at his rental home. Johnson’s length is a huge advantage and his name should be near the top of the leaderboard all week. He earned his way into the U.S. Open with a tie for medalist honors at his sectional qualifier in Ball Ground, GA and once shot a 58 on the Web.com Tour en route to his first victory. His last victory just came this past Sunday at the Rust-Oleum Championship so he’s riding some momentum into Erin Hills. His only other appearance at the U.S. Open came back in 2015 at Chambers Bay. He didn’t go very low that week, shooting rounds of 74 and 80 to miss the cut. Joel Stalter (No. 350) Last start: T-34: LYONESS OPEN (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP 24-year-old Joel Stalter from France will make his U.S. Open debut this week after making it out of the Surrey sectional with an 11-under finishing score. He’s only been a pro for three years but does have a win on the Challenge Tour. However, he hasn’t played well lately and has missed the weekend in seven of his last 10 starts. Jun 12, 2017; Erin, WI, USA; golfer Christopher Crawford follows his shot down the fourth fairway during the opening practice round of the U.S. Open golf tournament at Erin Hills. Christopher Crawford (a) (No. 1927 — No. 238-World Golf Ranking) Last start: 5th: USGA Men’s State Team Championship  2016 U.S. Open: MC 23-year-old Christopher Crawford is playing in his second U.S. Open after finishing second in the Summit, NJ sectional. He had six career wins at Drexel and shot 76-76 to miss the cut at Oakmont a season ago. Max Greyserman (No. 1927) Last start: MC: Bayview Place Cardtronics Open (Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP 22-year-old Max Greyserman, who played collegiately at Duke, is making his second professional start after missing the cut on the Mackenzie Tour a few weeks ago. He earned his spot in the U.S. Open with a 2-under finish at the Lakewood, WA sectional. He’s missed the cut in all four tournaments he’s entered in 2017. He made eight birdies in 11 holes during his second round of qualifying in California on his way to a 65 and has a PGA TOUR finish to his credit. He qualified for the Genesis Open earlier this year and tied for 49th. Tyler Light (No. 1927) Last start: MC: SIGA Dakota Dunes Open (Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP 26-year-old Tyler Light, who spends the majority of his time teeing it up on the Mackenzie Tour, was the first alternate out of the Springfield, Ohio sectional and will playing in his first U.S. Open. Back in 2012, he won his very first event as a pro, the Web.com Tour’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational, and then went and won the Cox Cl ic in his next start. He found his way to the PGA TOUR the following season but didn’t last long. He still plays the majority of his events on the Web.com Tour and has missed the cut in four of his last five starts. He has played better recently, making three consecutive cuts and finishing tied for eighth at the Nordea Masters. Chan Kim (No. 266) Last start: MC: JGT Championship Mori Building Cup Shishido Hills (Japan Golf Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Before missing the cut at the JGT Championship, Chan Kim won the Mizuno Open, his first Japan Golf Tour victory, and vaulted nearly 300 spots in the Official World Golf Ranking. He qualified for Erin Hills by posting a 7-under at the Ono City qualifier and made it out of the 6-for-3 playoff to secure his first U.S. Open berth. Gregory Bourdy (No. 163) Last start: T-21: Nordea Masters (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: T-18 35-year-old Gregory Bourdy, who finished 18th a season ago at Oakmont, was the first alternate from the Surrey sectional and will be making his third U.S. Open appearance. His other start came and The Olympic Club in 2012 and he missed the cut. He’s made seven of 10 cuts in 2017, including a tie for third at the Shenzhen International on the European Tour. Troy Merritt (No. 300) Last start: MC: FedEx St. Jude Cl ic (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Troy Merritt is having a rough go of it lately. Once ranked 82nd in the world, the 31-year-old has dropped more than 200 spots. He’s missed 10 cuts in 14 starts in 2017 but at least he finally made it to the U.S. Open for the first time after making it out of the Memphis sectional. Chris Wood (No. 60) Last start: T-2: Nordea Masters (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: T-23 Chris Wood jumped into the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking with a T-2 in the Nordea Masters and luckily maintained that position on the number, becoming the only competitor to get into the field on the final cutoff date as far as the rankings are concerned. This will be his second U.S. Open start after finishing in a tie for 23rd at Oakmont in 2016. The 32-year-old Venezuela native won his second event last year and has four top-20 finshes in 2017, his best being a tie for fourth at The Honda Cl ic. Yuta Ikeda (No. 59) Last start: MC: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: MC 31-year-old Yuta Ikeda has 16 wins on the Japan Golf Tour, his most recent coming late last yeaat the Casio World Open, and will be making his third appearance at the U.S. Open. He tied for 58th in 2010 at Pebble Beach and missed the cut at Oakmont last year. He’s dropped 25 spots in the world rankings since the beginning of the year after some missed cuts and average finishes but he’s got the game to compete at Erin Hills. Sean O’Hair (No. 71) Last start: T-52: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Sean O’Hair appeared in four U.S. Opens from 2006 to 2010, his best finish being a tie for 12th at Pebble Beach, but the 34-year-old four-time PGA TOUR winner hasn’t participated since. But getting into the top 30 for the TOUR Championship last fall ured him of a spot at Erin Hills and he’s finished in the top five in two of his last three tournaments, including a runner-up at the Dean & Deluca Invitational. He has four wins on the Japan Golf Tour has finished tied for third in two of his last three tournaments and also has two other top 10s in 2017. His last start in the United States was at the Sony Open, where he finished in a tie for 49th. Daniel Summerhays (No. 90) Last start: MC: FedEx St. Jude Cl ic (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: T-8 Daniel Summerhay was the first-ever to win on the Nationwide Tour (Web.com) and has made three U.S. Open starts. He missed the cut in 2010 but returned in 2015 to finish tied for 27th. Only a third-round 78 kept him from truly competing but he fought back nicely a year ago with a T-8 finish at Oakmont. He recently finished tied for 10th at the Memorial but does have a tendency to miss some cuts. His game will have to be sharp to once again crack the top 10 this week. Alexander Levy (No. 75) Last start: T-15: Nordea Masters (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Alexander Levy was one of the highlights of the Surrey sectional, shooting 12-under, and is set for his second U.S. Open start in three years following a T-27 at Chambers Bay. Levy has played well recently, finishing in the top 15 in three of his last four outings, including a win at the Volvo China Open, his fourth overall on the European Tour. Well, Andrew “Beef” Johnston is at Erin Hills for his second straight U.S. Open appearance. Beef became a worldwide phenomenon at Oakmont last year on his way to a T-54 finish and got into the field this week with a solid 10-under outing at the Surrey sectional. He got into the winner’s circle for the first time on the European Tour last year but hasn’t been able to get back. The Wisconsin crowd is going to love this guy. Brian Stuard (No. 150) Last start: T-82: FedEx St. Jude Cl ic (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP 34-year-old Brian Stuard missed the cut in his first two U.S. Open starts but is hopin g his third time will be a charm as he returns to the tournament after a two-year absence. He hasn’t cracked the top 20 since Super Bowl weekend in Phoenix but more often than not, Stuard is playing the weekend. He shot 66-65 in the Springfield, Ohio sectional to qualify. George Coetzee (No. 127) Last start: T-4: Nordea Masters (European Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP George Coetzee’s stock is rising. He hasn’t performed well in his three U.S. Open starts — his best finish was a tie for 56th at Merion — but his recent play has been stellar. Sure, he missed the cut at the BMW PGA Championship but in his last six tournaments, which includes the BMW, he has a T-8, a T-11, a solo eighth, another T-8 and a T-4 in his most recent start at the Nordea Masters. Momentum is big going into a major and Coetzee has plenty of it. Jun 1, 2017; Dublin, OH, USA; Keegan Bradley prepares for his putt on the four th green during the first round of The Memorial golf tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. He missed the cut at Oakmont but is looking for redemption in his second U.S. Open start. He tied for 22nd at THE PLAYERS but has struggled a bit since then with a missed cut at the St. Jude, a T-61 and a T-67. Keegan Bradley (No. 122) Last start: MC: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: MC Once thought to be one of the futures stars of the game of golf, Keegan Bradley, the former tenth-ranked player in the world, hasn’t quite lived up to that title and has won just one PGA TOUR event since his PGA Championship win in 2011. He played very well at Pinehurst at the 2014 U.S. Open and tied for 27th at Chambers Bay a year later. He missed the cut at Oakmont last year and has just one top-10 finish in 14 events in 2017. Kevin Na (No. 68) Last start: T-13: 60th Kolon Korea Open (Korean Golf Tour, One Asia Tour) 2016 U.S. Open: 7th Kevin Na is playing in his seventh U.S. Open and he has some nice experience to draw from at Erin Hills this week. He finished 12th at Pinehurst three years ago and had his best finish, a solo seventh, at Oakmont last year. He missed the cut at The Masters and withdrew from THE PLAYERS so the big tournaments haven’t been nice to him this year. He played three solid rounds at Oakmont but a third-round 77 cost him a chance at a better finish. He’s played solidly in 2017, including a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He’s been in the top 15 in two of his last three tournaments and has come close to winning a major championship before, losing a playoff at the Open Championship in 2015. Pat Perez (No. 42) Last start: T-19: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Pat Perez is making the most of his comeback. After sitting out nearly a year with a shoulder injury, he’s gotten himself into the top 50 in the world with consistent play. In 15 starts in 2017, Perez has three top-10 finishes and eight top 20s. This is the fifth U.S. Open start for Perez and his first since Torrey Pines in 2008, which was his best with a T-36 finish. Si Woo Kim (No. 32) Last start: WD: the Memorial Tournament (PGA TOUR) 2016 U.S. Open: DNP Si Woo Kim hasn’t exactly had the follow-up he was looking for after his life-changing win at THE PLAYERS Championship last month. He’s been dealing with some back issues, which caused him to withdraw from the Byron Nelson before it began and he missed the cut at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational before another withdrawal from the Memorial in the third round with an ankle injury. It was the sixth mid-round withdrawal of his young career and fifth of the 2017 season.
