Our group’s video is about the queering of vampires. We discuss several themes that are common within vampire films throughout history. A few of these themes include vampires being “creatures of the night”, vampires being ostracized or isolated, and the intimacy of vampire bites and the transformation that they represent. We looked at several films over various time periods including: Dracula’s Daughter, The Vampire Lovers, Let the Right One In, Interview with a Vampire, and Persona. We chose to spend the most time discussing Bergman’s 1966 film Persona. A film with little dialogue and no direct queer actions it leaves much open to the imagination and interpretation. This matter because these films have often created a safe space for queer folks. Instead of seeing villains many LGBT people can, instead, relate to these characters and connect with them in ways they aren’t able to connect to heterose*ual characters. They can relate to being an outcast and feared while also being isolated. This is very true with the earlier films that were filmed before LGBT people enjoyed many of the rights and privileges that they have today. queer media vampires queering cinema The goal of our video and overall message is to examine how camp and androgyny are used in popular culture and the potential negative stereotypes that come along with it. From the beginning, we knew that we wanted to examine the different areas that people use camp and androgyny in. Originally, we were going to focus on artists and their personal use of the art forms, but we decided to look at a broader idea, rather than shifting our focus onto one person in particular. We took the feedback and condensed our ideas into the video we have now.
