as someone who knows all too well how easy it is to fall into the consumerism that plagues our society, i admit i have not always made the best choices when it comes to my purchases. when i embarked on my “moderate minimalist” journey, one of the first things i cleaned out was my collection of cheap jewelry. i was over buying $5 necklaces that tarnished within a month, and decided that instead of buying ten cheap pieces, i would buy a few higher quality pieces i could wear all the time, a.k.a a capsule jewelry wardrobe. i became frustrated with there was a time when i was on all of it. i tweeted multiple times a day, uploaded the requisite selfies to instagram, and spent way too long scrolling through my facebook feed. i had felt for awhile that i was spending too much time on these mediums, but it reached a breaking point when i first got cheated on and then dumped by my then-fiancé. not long after i had moved back home after this split, my dog of nine years pas*ed from cancer. i was angry, hurting, unhappy, and i turned to social media to make a facade of being the stereotypical i am not sure how old i was, but i know i must have been quiet young, simply because i cannot pinpoint a year. my mom was there, and possibly my aunt and grandma. in my memory the bookstore is huge, easily three stories, and the walls are green. the women in my family went on shopping trips in those days, and i was as patient as i could be, being a child. if i was good, i was allowed a treat. i remember my treat that day, because it was a book about dinosaurs, one of those little illustrated field guides that are written for younger readers sara blinked as the little bird she had just drawn co*ked his head at her. “you mean to tell me that you’re my guide? but—-you’re just a little fat bird!” “how rude!” said the parakeet, ruffling his feathers indignantly. “you could stand to lose a few pounds yourself.” sara responded to this by slamming her sketchbook shut, which prompted a squawk. “don’t be so hasty, we need each
