the ocean depths were once considered just a setting for shipwrecks, monster squid and primordial ooze, but over past decades scientists have discovered a previously unknown wealth of biodiversity. the dark depths of our oceans are home to cold-water corals, sponge fields, seamounts, hydrothermal vents and a multitude of other ecosystems that shelter strange and mysterious creatures found nowhere else on earth. but this extraordinarily rich and fragile de*p-sea life is under threat from a range of human economic activities. posing the greatest direct, imminent, physical threat are fishing practices (the most destructive being de*p-sea bottom trawling) and de*p seabed mining. the dscc is urging states and policy makers to take strong measures and adopt robust regulations to ensure the protection of the ocean depths and of the species that are so often “out of sight, out of mind” – those that live in the de*p sea. wemove.eu, together with several dscc members, is asking concerned citizens to sign a petition commitments to save and protect european seas. among the many commitments are some specific actions required to ensure that the new eu legislation on de*p-sea fishing adopted in december 2016 is effectively implemented, including the ban on bottom trawling in the. exclusive photos show de*p-sea canyon in u.s. waters teeming with…. we don’t know the impact’: conservationists fight attempts to mine…. the dscc was founded in 2004, to address the issue of bottom trawling on the high seas in the absence of an effective governance regime. the coalition is made up of over 70 non-governmental organisations (ngos), fishers organisations and law and policy institutes, all committed to a list of interesting de*p-sea related sites and links from around the web. you have any questions or comments or if you would like to join our coalition.
