Three years ago, authorities raided a compound in Tilbury, Ontario and seized 31 pit bulls from a dog fighting operation. What was discovered can only be described as a horror scene. The dogs were found with severe scarring on their head, neck and forelimbs. They lived attached to chains and tied to metal stakes in the ground. Three of the dogs were immediately euthanized for medical reasons. Many of the dogs had been born there as puppies, never knowing a life of peace. The remaining 28 underwent behavioural evaluation by the OSPCA and 21 were deemed a “menace to society”. In stepping in to fight against an organization with a mandate to protect an*mals, we had no idea that it would turn into a year long legal battle. The challenges were many and complicated by the current BSL (breed specific legislation) against pit bulls. However, the injustice of what had been done to these dogs, combined with our stance against BSL, left us determined to see this through to the end. We could not turn our backs on them. Bringing in an impartial and well-respected behaviourist to as*ess the dogs was a key factor in The 21 dogs received rigorous training and behavioural as*essment from a specialized training facility in north Florida. They were given tailored one-on-one attention and specialized training that has allowed them to recover from the trauma they experienced.
