Stop me if you've heard this one before, but I don't think I have so thought I'd ask. What's your favorite Motown cover by a non-Motown Mine has to be Stop! in the Name of Love by Margie Joseph (the long version, natch). She gives that great song a completely different, sinister twist. To me, it evokes more the spirit of Smiling Faces Sometimes (which may have come out around the same time) than it does the original Stop! A great song by a talented artist who never achieved the fame I think she was expected to. Her version got a huge amount of airplay on Detroit radio way back then, but I don't think it hit nationally. For me, it is 1968. I was in high school, had a gi*lfriend and an after-school job so I could buy me some 45RPM records, albums and cas*ette tape and stereo cas*ette players. Besides Motown, I discovered how much I liked The Intruders, Archie Bell & The Drells and other artist. I think 1968 was a happening year for many reasons. That particular was a focal point for all kinds of music, progress, social upheavals, fads and protest. All of which came out in the music. I've notice that on Decades channel with Bill Kurtis also. That show seems to focus on 1968 much more than any other year. 1968 for me stands out more than any other when it comes to music. What is your although i'm starting this with DR and Supremes data, i'm really wanting to discuss overall motown in 70 and 71, both DR and the Sup had tremendous success in the UK. singles were charting much higher there than they mostly did in the US. and their consistency on the UK charts was stronger as two entities than when they were the DRATS I Loves You Por*y - Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Diana Ross, Julie London et al.
