Zirconium Mover & Shaker — Tactile Turn

Finally, the Zirconium Movers & Shakers are ready! There are 50 Movers and 50 Shakers available. They won’t ship out until Friday December 21st as we are waiting on clips from our DLC coater. My current thought is that I’ll make one batch of these a year. I love zirconium, but it fights me at every turn when machining it. The material is similar to titanium, but tends to break drills and other tools a whole lot more often and just have oddball issues. Most materials are well known by machine tool makers. I was having issues with an early batch of zirconium a couple years ago and so I finally called the manufacturer of the drills I used. The engineer I was talking to said he had never heard of zirconium, but he would look through all of the company records to see if he could get me some more information. Two hours later the guy calls me back and says he found two references to the material, and gave me a little advice that’s helped out tremendously. Most makers don’t want to work with this stuff because it is a fire hazard. I have to admit, I’ve had a few fires. I stopped working with this material for about a year and a half because I had one fire that really scared me. The entire pen except for the clip is made from Zirconium. The clips are stainless steel that is coated in a black DLC coating. These pens took quite a bit of time to develop as the mechanism had to be redesigned a little bit. When zirconium is in the raw form, it has a titanium-like color, fairly light gray. After it is heated with a torch it turns dark gray. The trouble with that is that the original walls of the mechanism were too thin, so we’ve added about 0.020” of material and now they work beautifully. Once torched to get the dark gray color, zirconium has an extremely hard layer on the top of the material. I don’t know the Rockwell hardness, but I’ve been carrying a zirconium Glider with me most days for the last two years and it looks brand new. I’m not going to tell you that these will never scratch, but I will tell you that they hold up really well. If it does scratch through the dark gray layer, you can email me and I can walk you through how to re-torch the parts which will make them dark gray again, or you can send it back to me and I will re-torch them. Even though zirconoum is tough to work with, it is stunning when it is finished. I’d have to say it is probably my favorite material. Slightly heavier than titanium, but lighter than stainless steel/br /copper.

Tactile Turn Sliders and Gliders Anodized Aluminum Colors — Tactile Turn

These are in stock and ready to ship out the same day they are ordered in most cases. Slider or Glider? This question is usually the first thing people ask about.  The Slider is slightly shorter and comes with a Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 medium point with black ink and will fit all other Parker style refills. The Glider is the slightly longer version that comes with a 0.38mm Pilot G2 with black ink refill. These are a little easier than the old pens to allow refills to fit and most require no modification at all for many different refills. Both pens fit well in almost all hands, though if you have larger hands you might be more comfortable with a Glider. Sliders will include the Glider spring. Bolt The main piece that makes these pens really interesting is the bolt action. I use a shape unlike any other pen out there. It is one fluid motion to advance or retract the refill. Because the surfaces of both the interior part and the inside surface have been carefully machined to be extra smooth, the action feels amazingly satisfying.  Aluminum Since these were originally made in 2016 I've had people asking me to make lighter weight versions. I've resisted aluminum because I had issues with anodizing. Well last year I was finally able to find a great shop that has excellent quality, so now we have 8 new colors in the aluminum line.

Titanium Mover & Shaker — Tactile Turn

Some people might want to call these Generation 2 Movers & Shakers and that works, but here at Tactile Turn these are just going to be referred to as Movers & Shakers since the old pens are no longer for sale.  Movers & Shakers are for the type of person that loves a great click pen! These pens are made in my shop in Richardson, Texas. The biggest feature that sets these pens apart from others is an all titanium click mechanism that we make for these pens. This click mechanism is not found on any other pens. It is unique to the Tactile Turn Movers & Shakers. It is the ultimate click mechanism. It will withstand abuse and use and last for generations. It also has a long length which means that when the refill is retracted, it hides about an eighth of an inch or 3mm inside the pen. This means the chances of ink getting on your clothes is very unlikely. It's a detail most manufacturers overlook, but it is very important on a click pen. No matter what material you chose, the wall thicknesses in these pens are thicker towards the front of the pen and thinner towards the back. This keeps the weight distribution of the pen just right and that makes the pen feel great in the hand whether you are jotting down a note or taking dozens of pages of notes. Tactile Turn pens are known for their texture. Machined pens often forget about grip, or have uncomfortable grips. We machine in a groove along the entire length of the pen that is hard to describe. It won't bite into your skin, but it provides just the right amount of grip. It is subtle, but it also protects the pens from light scratches by providing a textured surface that disguises light scratches much better than a smooth surface. Mover or Shaker? These allow many refills to fit and most require no modification at all. The mechanisms on these require all refills to be the same length, so some require slight trimming, but if you are determined there are lots of options. After meeting some great people in the industry and having plenty of experience with the material, I have been able to bring the titanium price point down significantly. Obviously, the copper content in this alloy is extremely high so it has the best natural antimicrobial properties for those of you that want a pen that you can let others use and still feel like you don't have to scrub grime off every day. All parts of these pens are made from copper except the clip which is stainless steel and the mechanism that is titanium.
