Different styles used in rock paintings signify that they were painted at different periods of time. The oldest paintings, from more than 16,000 years ago, where are composed of simple markings. Afterwards, aboriginal Australians started to sketch natural objects, like plants and an*mals, before depicting human figures and supernatural deities. Signs of a distinctively Aboriginal artistic style could be seen in the naturalistic period: the objects are outlined with long, flowing st*okes. What’s more, different shading techniques were used for different parts of each picture. For example, the head, feet, and tails of the an*mals are dense and solid while the As time went by, painters would often use the same rocks, painting over previous images.
