has emerged as an Internet project from the activities to explore the Roman theater of Mogontiacu*-Mainz. It was created on the initiative of Dr. med. Gert Rupprecht and under the initial collaboration of Dr. Ing. Hubertus Mikler. The aim is to put together in a short form basic information on all known theaters of Greco-Roman antiquity. Thus, a quick access to the questions is to be established, what is known about the appearance of a theater and what was held there - each strictly oriented to the historical and archaeological tradition of each building. The ancient theaters were public spaces that were the focus of society at the great celebrations of their communities. Here, festive performances of sacral festivals after sacrifices and processions for the gods or the ruler were performed in different ways. Anyone attending these celebrations as a member of the society also took part in the stage performances and this explains the enormous audience capacity of the theaters according to today's standards. The charity of leading members of society, known by the Greek word euergetism, made possible the construction of such complex facilities. In return for this generosity, which was perceived as an obligation, the community granted the donor honorary statues in the theater and perpetuated it for posterity until our own days. This was accompanied by the worship of gods and rulers, which found expression in each theater in the form of a statuary equipment. The large, well-known games were attended by professionally trained actors, whose successes in the agonics, especially of the Greek East, were listed on numerous inscriptions.
