I sat across from this blue-eyed boy, and I was convinced that he had made a mistake when he asked me to be his gi*lfriend. I was a shy, small-town gi*l who dreamed of living a quiet life with my 13 kids, a stack of books, and maybe a few cats. He was a wildly-independent, rock-climbing, thrill seeker who spouted ma*ure wisdom and philosophy from his old soul like he had lived this life before. He began by telling me how much he loved me and how he wanted to be married to me until we were old and gray. I, of course, was head-over-heels. No need to say anything else. But then, he continued. He told me how he worried that our differing personalities might leave us both a little unsatisfied. Maybe he would be too much for me and I would feel as though I was always trying to keep up with him. Or maybe I would want luxuries in life that didn’t mesh with his personal philosophies.  I understood what he meant. I understood, but I knew then and more so now, that when life brings you the person you are meant to be with, you make sacrifices and make a commitment to figure Therefore, that’s where “The Dirtbag Ultimatum” was born. We innocently and maybe naively sat down and made a pact to honor the other person’s goals and dreams, even if they didn’t always make sense to the other person. Some of the commitments were generic and wide arching like our promise to find jobs that didn’t keep us away from each other too much or our goal of spending money on things that really mattered like experiences and time together. Some terms were specifics such as Justin’s request to sleep in the Texas dirt in a sleeping bag at least once a year. I agreed, and he promised to help me achieve my goal of 13 children.
