If you add outdoor exercise, exposure to sunlight enhances vitamin D production, which may be partially responsible for this mood-enhancing effect (Kerr et al., 2015).  Research shows that as little as five minutes of exercise can improve self-esteem (Barton and Pretty, 2010). Any location will do, but being outdoor near greenery or water enhances this effect. Interestingly, low- to moderate-intensity physical activity shows greater improvements in self-esteem than high-intensity outdoor exercise. If you find a gym membership to be too expensive, an outdoor environment can provide a low-cost solution for everyone. You do not have to be an athlete or in training. Take advantage of the great outdoors right where you live to reduce those time constraints.  One of the greatest benefits of outdoor exercise lies in its inherent opportunity to connect with nature. Exercising outdoors can help you feel grounded, de*pen your connection to your environment and enhance your appreciation for the beauty around you. We could all use time away from our electronic devices and breath fresh oxygen rich air!
