REVIEW: Behind You: OneShot Horror Stories by Brian Coldrick Of all the things to be scared of -- lions, clowns, the geopolitical condition of the world, and so on -- there is none more potent, and none are more universal, than anxiety about the unknown. Some of the terror employs this to effect, letting your mind grab the slack of filling corners with contours pulled direct from the dark recesses of one's mind. Behind You, Brian Coldrick's terrifying collection, captures this feeling over and over again, moving the camera a bit so as to let you take in the fright of anything Behind You is just a run of single-panel horror tales, and each one tapping in to that primal fear which something's lurking outside your vision, also it is able to see you just fine. Coldrick's character brings to mind Junji Ito -- twisted, bloated limbs, elongated necks and vulpine mouths litter the slopes, and also the mundanity of their everyday is sharply contrasted by the lurking phantoms on every single page. It's wonderful how many unique tastes of fear Coldrick manages to offer through to those pages -- there was every other variety, revulsion and depression terror of dread you can desire. Of Behind You, the economy is striking -- using a couple of paragraphs along with an image, you're given a story, a minute of anxiety and apprehension frozen that you savour. Behind You suggests the way to do terror, you never want pages and pages of gothic scene-setting or centuries of lore a well-drawn page, a clear notion, and the niggling sense that there's some thing in your vision. Give it a read once you're home alone on a windy and cold night -- I'm convinced there wont be such a thing reading on your shoulder. .
