I decided to become a doctor because I have always been fascinated by the amazing ways our bodies work. To me, learning about our bodies and health can be exciting and help us lead fuller lives. My approach to patient care has always been focused on patient education. I aim to help my patients learn not just about how their bodies work, but also how different diseases can affect the normal processes. Most of us want to be as healthy and possible and I like to help patients find ways to achieve those goals. The field of medicine is constantly changing and we are learning new things all the time. My job is to stay on top of that and to learn about my patients as individuals because each person’s health care story is unique. My favorite thing to do outside of work is to spend time by the water of any kind (ocean, lake, pool, mountain stream) with family and friends. I also enjoy learning about different cultures through travel and eating I am a third generation Internist. I grew up going on house calls and making rounds at the hospital with my dad in Wilmington, NC, where I grew up. I saw the relationships he built with his patients over his career, and I knew that the inter-personal aspect of medicine is very important. My clinical interests are management of chronic diseases, specifically cardiovascular disease, hypertension and hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). I also enjoy sports medicine. My philosophy of care is getting to know patients on a personal level and providing individualized care to them based on what their values are. I also believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Outside of work, I love to cook (and eat!), travel, practice yoga and A medical home is a team-based approach to your health care.
