Current OpeningsThe VPO welcomes both and professional musicians. We are looking for players that practice regularly, have experience playing in an orchestra, and have training at a university entrance equivalent level (e.g., RCM Level 8) or higher. Auditions for some positions may be required. All ages are welcome.The VPO is currently seeking musicians for the following positions:Harp (occasional)Percussion (occasional)Violin (regular)If you play an instrument other than the above, you can email us to be added to our substitute player list ([email protected]). In the event that one of our regular members is absent or if our repertoire requires a large orchestra, we invite substitute players to join us on a per-concert basis.  Rehearsals & ConcertsWeekly rehearsals take place Wednesdays from 7:30 - 10pm from early September until the end of May. Dress rehearsals occur on Friday evenings before each concert. Rehearsals take place at Shaughnessy Heights United Church, 1550 West 33rd Avenue @ Granville, Vancouver.The VPO currently performs a five concert season. Concerts occur mostly on Saturday evenings with an occasional Sunday matinée concert. Most concerts take place at Shaughnessy Heights United Church and 1-2 concerts per season will be at other venues throughout metro Vancouver (e.g., Capilano University, UBC Chan Centre).Attendance PolicyPlayers are expected to attend all rehearsals for a concert, although 1-2 absences are usually permitted at the discretion of the section leader. Absences must be reported to the section leader as soon as possible so efforts may be made to find a substitute player for the missed rehearsal. Players are encouraged to play as many concerts in the season as possible.Membership FeesThe VPO is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization and membership fees are essential to supporting our annual operational costs. Regular Membership fees are payable at the beginning of each season and include the benefits of a guaranteed seat for each concert as well as first priority when registering to join for the following season. Occasional Players pay a per concert fee and do not have a guaranteed seat. REGULAR MEMBERS (annual fee includes all concerts) $150Student/Senior $75OCCASIONAL PLAYERS (per concert fee) $30Student/Senior $15

Rehearsals & Concerts

The Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra is a thriving, full-sized community orchestra made up of accomplished and dedicated professional and non-professional musicians. Under the professional music direction of Conductor Jin Zhang, the VPO mounts a five to six concert season presenting programs that include great works drawn from the traditional orchestral repertoire, as well as music for orchestra and soloists, choral, and Canadian works. VPO concerts feature guest soloists who are well-known local professional musicians and gifted young performers.Most VPO concerts are presented at Shaughnessy Heights United Church, located at the intersection of Granville Street and 33rd Ave in Vancouver. On occasion, the orchestra collaborates with different musical groups and performs at other venues. The orchestra meets every Wednesday evening from September to May for rehearsals and performances.A registered not-for-profit society, the VPO is entirely volunteer-driven, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and run by its members. Dear Music Lovers,As Music Director of the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2018/19 season. We truly believe that this year’s musical offerings include something for everyone. You’ll hear familiar and much-loved orchestral works by Beethoven, Gershwin, and Schubert along with a very special tribute to female cl ical composers and a much-requested movie-themed concert. The orchestra is joined by a variety of wonderful professional soloists who will perform with us throughout the season. I sincerely look forward to another season of music making with this wonderful group of fine and dedicated musicians, and to working with our  istant Conductor, Jaelem Bhate. And to you, our loyal audience – I am very excited to welcome you back! Please share the news of our VPO season with your family, friends, and neighbors. Dear Friends,Since the early 1960‘s, the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra has been committed to enriching lives through the shared experience of live music. The 2018-19 season will continue to bring the p ion and excitement of symphonic music to audiences in Vancouver and beyond. Maestro Jin Zhang has planned a wonderful season guaranteed to challenge and inspire us all. The VPO is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization that supports local community musicians and artists. In addition to ticket sales, we rely on the support and generosity of our orchestra members, our audience, volunteers, and community partners to ensure that we have the financial resources to present artistically excellent concerts. Donations of any size are sincerely appreciated and are instrumental to everything the VPO does.Please like us on Facebook to receive up-to-date information throughout the season.
