summer slide contributes to the achievement gap. ysi summer enrichment program can help. register today. summer sat prep. no clubs activities, no training, no distractions. iv league, small campus, strong athletic program.. experience multiple colleges on one trip.. trenton-area students need academic enrichment activities during the summer and their families need that service to be affordable.  young. scholars’ institute (ysi) provides both. the program includes weekly field trips as well. there are other summer enrichment activities in. the  area; however, many are priced beyond the financial means of the typical trenton household. many community organizations have. reasonably-priced programs but rarely match the academic rigor of ysi or link it to college preparation activities.. we learned that the “summer slide” or  summer learning loss is an occurrence studied extensively by johns hopkins university researchers. whose longitudinal study tracked baltimore students from 1st grade through age 22. although low-income children in the study made as much. progress in reading during the academic year as middle-income children, the poorer children’s reading skills slipped away during. the summer months. the researchers concluded that two-thirds of the 9th grade reading achievement gap can be explained by unequal access. to summer learning opportunities during elementary school. this achievement level is a huge determinant of whether students stay in. in order to help close the achievement gap, we (parents and community) must invest in the educational development of area youth during the. during the trenton public schools’ spring break, ysi offers very limited office hours. some ysi staff and volunteers chaperone the spring college tour from april 2-6. this year’s tour includes universities in maryland, washington, dc and virginia. the universities are a mix of historically black colleges & universities (hbcus), rural style campuses and those with strong athletic programs.
